Tired of looking at “We Buy Houses” signs posted all over telephone phones and itching to get involved in your neighborhood? We can help with that! Find an illegal signs collection event or drop-off location near your neighborhood and reduce litter in our city while helping out your local civic organization!
This month, about 30 community-based organizations will be removing signs posted illegally in the right-of-way throughout Philadelphia through the Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet’s Illegal Signs Roundup, which runs from June 1st to June 15th. It’s illegal to post signs on public property such as utility poles, streetlights, traffic or parking signs and devices, historical markers, and trees, and these signs often turn into litter. Participating registered groups will receive $.50 per sign up to $250 (or 500 signs) for their help, funds that they can use to purchase new supplies for cleaning and greening their neighborhoods, including the removal of bandit signs year-round. If you join in this effort and help collect illegal signs, you can help an organization in your neighborhood earn these funds.
Each group will take note of the general areas where they remove signs, such as the locations of where they found them and what the signs look like. The Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet will utilize this information to determine who may be posting the signs as well as how to proactively prevent the posting of illegal signs in the future. The collected signs will be used by Mural Arts’ Trash Academy to create an art project to promote public awareness of litter.
